Blind Veterans UK Leadership Development

Helping you build your future

At the heart of our organisation lies four very distinct and powerful values that empower us to deliver our great work for our veterans.

We know that without the great team within Blind Veterans UK we could not achieve our goals and just as we are unswervingly committed to delivering on our vision to achieve victory over blindness, we have an equal commitment to helping our people develop and grow.

We are on an exciting development journey designed with our partners Discovery, to support our leaders in their roles and one that puts learning and growth at the forefront of our ambitions.

Introduction to Learning

As we progress our careers, we all need to continue developing professionally, but we don’t all need to develop in the same way. Aligned to the organisation’s strategic goals and ambitions, the start of our learning begins by understanding how effective we are currently and identifying areas in which we could grow.

We achieve this by stepping out of our day jobs and participating in a development centre, designed to highlight the skills you already have as well as identify how you can be better in the future.

At the core of this process is the ability to identify the right development for you, that will benefit your day-to-day role, improve results & well-being, and ensure you have a fulfilling career.

Have you ever wondered how good you are in your role in the context of what great looks like? Do you even know what great should look like?

As we start this journey with you, we will provide plenty of opportunity for self-reflection, start to contextualise & identify things you are doing well and, help you understand areas of development, unique to you. The path of discovery is always an exciting one…

What is a Development Centre?

Rarely in our busy jobs do we have the time to truly reflect on what is working well. The whole development centre process is all about you.

Simply put, a development centre is a snapshot of all the things you do every day in your role, demonstrated through a series of group and individual activities, combined with observations and valuable feedback.

There is nothing to catch you out, there is no pass or fail. It is an exciting platform to showcase your talents.

All the activities provide ample opportunity to demonstrate your skills and knowledge in the context of the part you play in the success of the organisation.

Brian Herbert Quote

There is no such thing as failure…. only feedback!

The output of the development centre will form part of your personal development plans and the start of your learning journey.

You will receive valuable feedback that is unique to you. You will find out how you like to operate, what is going really well, and areas of development that, through training programmes, masterclasses and coaching, Blind Veterans are committed to supporting you to be the best possible version of yourself that you can be.

Should I be nervous?

Whenever we are placed in unfamiliar surroundings it’s perfectly okay to feel nervous or apprehensive; that’s expected.

As experts in leadership development, many thousands of delegates from Discovery’s client companies have participated in these centres over the years. They may have felt the same way, but if each of them could share with you their journeys, you would find out how the opportunity to hold a mirror up has helped them progress their careers. In fact, we have captured some of their thoughts on camera, shown here in these videos from one of their clients, RS Components.

What happens next?

Over the coming weeks you will be invited to complete a Parallax behavioural profile that identifies your behavioural preferences, together with a short exercise that determines your preferred learning styles. None of us learn in exactly the same way.

Alongside this, your L&D team will coordinate which centre you will be invited to participate in.

Typically, within a week or so of your development centre we will invite you to a feedback session. This is where you will get the opportunity to reflect & review, and start the process of building your development plans going forward.

To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.
– Winston Churchill

Following your development centres, you will be invited to our leadership programmes. We will create an exciting and memorable learning journey that goes to the heart of delivering exceptional leadership capability at your respective levels of responsibility.

Discovery understands that people learn best by doing, and being able to put the theory into practice in a meaningful way that embeds a deeper understanding. As such, the experiential programmes are designed to be flexible, adopting agile learning principles and methodology that will appropriately stretch you in a fun and engaging way.

During the entire learning journey, you will participate in experiential workshops, reflections, and masterclasses, around the guiding principles of your values of “caring is at the heart of everything we do, we enable and trust each other, we foster a pioneering spirit, we celebrate success!” , and what this means for exceptional leadership for your organisation.

As a result, you and your organisation will experience:

  • Enhanced inter-personal capability
  • A framework for success that cascades through the business
  • Embedding and supporting critical business skills such as commerciality, operational management and project management
  • Developing the right behaviours, including taking responsibility, agility, inclusivity and professionalism
  • Becoming accountable for management and delivery of self and team
  • Increasing awareness of own behaviours, and the potential positive/negative impact these can have
  • Understanding coaching models and theories to support employee development
  • Sustainable change beyond the tenure of the leader
  • Embedded learning in teams – learning seen as a solution to solving problems
  • Tools to maintain excellence – establishing the right habits
  • Work-based interventions to bring the learning to life and in real-time
  • Developing your own identity as a leader
